Weekly Prayer: Sweetestness of Gratitude
SCRIPTURE
Psalm 100:4 — “Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name.”
1 Thessalonians 5:18 — “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
Colossians 3:15 — “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.”
James 1:17 — “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”
WEEKLY PRAYER
This week, I found myself talking with my kids about gratitude. In the middle of the back-to-school whirlwind, with schedules shifting, backpacks overflowing, and emotions running high, I realized we all needed a moment to slow down and connect. So, I took them to a little local açaí bowl place for a treat. The bowls came out bright and colorful, jeweled with fruit and sprinkled with granola, and everyone dug in. But something was missing—those two small words, “thank you.”
Instead, our little corner of the snack shack filled with sighs and low-level complaints: “I’m so tired,” “Today was too busy,” “I’m frustrated about this and that.” It wasn’t until we stepped back out into the heavy heat of late afternoon that it struck me. We had tasted the sweetness of fruit, but forgotten the deeper sweetness of gratitude. What I had hoped would be a time of refreshment and connection instead left us more drained, our joy slipping quietly through the cracks of ungrateful hearts.
Gratitude has the power to transform ordinary moments into holy ones. Scripture reminds us that God inhabits the praises of His people. When we lift thanks and bless His name, His presence draws near, turning even the busiest days into sanctuaries of peace. That is what I long for in my family, and it is what I pray over yours as well.
PRAYER
Father, give us hearts overflowing with gratitude. Lift our eyes to You and fix our gaze on Your holy place. Cover my family, giving us lenses to see every moment from a heavenly perspective. Train our mouths to agree with Your good plans and purposes, and silence the habit of complaint. Let gratitude be one of the marks that sets us apart from this world. As we put praise on our lips, may Your Spirit inhabit our words, cultivating in us a lifestyle of gratitude. Amen.
