The Heart of a Mother: Seen, Called, and Carried by God

  • Honoring the Many Forms of Motherhood

  • “As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; and you will be comforted...”
    — Isaiah 66:13 (NIV)

  • Mother’s Day can stir up so many emotions — joy, gratitude, longing, grief, even silence. While culture often celebrates just one version of motherhood, Scripture shows us something richer: the nurturing heart of God reflected in women of all walks of life.

In Isaiah 66:13, God compares His love to the loving comfort of a mother. It’s not a throwaway metaphor — it’s a glimpse into the deep tenderness of God’s character. And it affirms something powerful: mothering is not just a role — it’s a calling, a reflection of God’s own care.

    That means…

    • If you are a biological or adoptive mom, God sees the weariness and wonder of your journey.

    • If you’re a woman who has longed to be a mother, your desire is sacred — and your capacity to nurture is not wasted.

    • If you’ve served as a spiritual mother, a mentor, or a steady voice of love in someone’s life — you are walking out something holy.

Being a mother isn't limited to bearing children. It’s about cultivating life and nourishing its growth — through words, prayer, service, and laying down one’s life.

So whether you hold a child in your arms, in your heart, or only in your prayers — know this:

You reflect the heart of God.

    You are seen.
    You are called.
    You are carried.

  • Take a moment this week to write a message or text to a woman who’s mothered you in a meaningful way — even if she never knew it. And if you’re walking through Mother’s Day with grief or longing, know that God holds space for your heart, too.

  • Lord,
Thank You for the gift of women who mother in many forms. For the ones who carry children, for the ones who carry dreams, for the ones who carry others in prayer — bless them. Heal wounds, honor sacrifices, and multiply comfort. Remind every woman today that her love reflects Yours. In Jesus’ name,
    Amen.

  • 1. Who in your life has mothered you in a way that left a lasting impact?

What did she do or say that helped you feel seen, known, or loved?

    2. How have you been called to “mother” others — whether through parenting, mentoring, or simply showing up for someone?

Are there people in your life right now who need your comfort or presence?

    3. If you’ve experienced grief, loss, or unfulfilled longings around motherhood, what would you want to say to God about that today?

Be honest. Pour it out. Let Him meet you in that space.

    4. In what ways do you see the nurturing character of God in yourself?

Do you struggle to see that? Ask God to show you how He’s using you, even in quiet or hidden ways.

    5. What does “being carried by God” mean to you in this season of your life?

Where do you need His comfort the most?

    6. Write a letter to a spiritual mother in your life — someone who shaped your faith or offered guidance.

You don’t have to send it (unless you want to!), but let the gratitude flow.

    7. Ask God: Who are You calling me to nurture or encourage this week?

Write down a name or a situation. Pray over it and listen for how He might be asking you to respond.
