Bible with Brandi Week 30 – Psalms 91
Even before the fire, I loved Psalm 91. It is one of the Scriptures spoken over my son in his evening blessing. But since the fire, Psalm 91 hits differently It begins, “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” (Psalm 91:1) To “dwell” means to remain, stay, or make your home with. Even though my earthly home burned, I am not homeless if I find my dwelling place in Him! His refuge is not temporary. It cannot be burned by fire, destroyed by disaster, or taken away by circumstances. That is why I can “say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him I will trust.’” (Psalm 91:2)
There are days when my emotions still catch me off guard. Grief comes in waves. Some moments are harder than others. But God’s character has never changed. So even when my feelings waver, I choose to declare what I know to be true: He is still my refuge. He is still my fortress. He is still worthy of my trust. Verse five speaks to my heart when trauma tries to settle in my heart. “You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day.” (Psalm 91:5) Fear tries to linger after the crisis is over. Sometimes it shows up in the middle of the night. Sometimes it whispers,
“What if it happens again?” Sometimes it convinces us that because something painful happened once, we’re never really safe again. But fear is not God’s word over my life. Nor the life of my family. Instead, God promises to “give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways.” (Psalm 91:1) I’ll never know all the ways God protected my family that day. I’ll never know what could have happened but didn’t. What I do know is this: His hand was evident. He spared our lives. He protected our animals. And He has faithfully carried us every step since. So, I will take Him at His word and claim verses 15-16 over my life and the life of my family. “He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him, and show him My salvation.” (Psalm 91:15–16)
Maybe you’re walking through a fire of your own today. It may not be a literal one. It may be a broken relationship, a frightening diagnosis, financial uncertainty, or a season that has left you exhausted. Psalm 91 doesn’t promise you’ll never face hardship. It promises that He is your refuge during it.

Where have you been looking for security instead of making the Lord your dwelling place?
What fear or uncertainty keeps trying to take hold of your heart, and how does Psalm 91 remind you of God's faithfulness in the middle of it?
Can you identify a time when you can clearly see God's protection or provision, even if you did not recognize it in the moment?
What circumstance are you facing today that you need to intentionally place into God's hands, trusting that He is your refuge and fortress?
