Weekly Prayer: A Prayer for Family Legacy
SCRIPTURE
Deuteronomy 6:6 to 7 (ESV)
“And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.”
Psalm 103:17 to 18 (ESV)
“But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him, and His righteousness to children’s children, to those who keep His covenant and remember to do His commandments.”
WEEKLY PRAYER REFLECTION
As I reflect on Christmas, memories drift me back to the years of waiting—the quiet Decembers before children, twelve Christmases without the sound of little feet or the echo of giggles down the hall. This year marked our twelfth Christmas as parents. How gently God weaves time. What once felt empty is now full, and before I realized it, He has restored what was lost—often in ways more beautiful than I imagined.
Now, as I look forward to the new year—a year on equal footing, a year not beginning in deficit, at least not of this kind—I want to pray into generations. That what we waited so long for, and what God so faithfully made a reality, would be only a portion of what He has planned, for He is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine. That as time continues to pass, my children, and theirs after them, would burn in their hearts for all that God intends—that His words would be written on their hearts and spoken in their coming and going. That their first passion would be for Him and His reign in the earth and in their hearts, that they would seek first His kingdom and His righteousness. That they would know His voice, delight in His law, and walk in His ways, choosing life so that they and their descendants may live. And that long after my prayers have been whispered and forgotten, the steadfast love of the Lord would continue from everlasting to everlasting upon them, unfolding His promises through generation after generation.
WEEKLY PRAYER
Lord,
My family is Yours. May our legacy be that of the Kingdom. In all things. Always. Amen.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
Where have I seen God redeem seasons of waiting in my life, and how has His timing shaped my faith?
What hopes and prayers am I carrying for the generations that will come after me?
How am I intentionally inviting God into the daily rhythms of my family life, in our coming and going, words and actions?
What does it look like for my family to seek first the Kingdom of God in this current season?
In what ways am I helping pass on a love for God’s Word, not just through teaching, but through how I live?
Where might God be asking me to trust Him with the future legacy of my family rather than trying to control it myself?
How can I pray with greater faith that God is working beyond what I can see or imagine, both now and for generations to come?
