Weekly Prayer: A Prayer for Wise Words

Gracious Lord and Heavenly Father,

Your Word warns us that “the lips of a fool consume him. The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness, and the end of his talk is raving madness. Yet the fool multiplies words.” (Ecclesiastes 10:12–14)

Lord, guard our hearts and our mouths. Make us people who are quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. Give us wisdom to know when to speak and when to remain silent.

Keep us from careless words, foolish arguments, and speech that tears others down. Instead, let the words of our mouths be gracious, seasoned with salt, bringing life, encouragement, truth, and peace to those who hear them. May our speech reflect the wisdom that comes from above. May it be pure, peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruit.

May the meditation of our hearts and the words of our mouths be pleasing in Your sight, O Lord, our Rock and our Redeemer.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
