Hope in Grief; Faith in Times of Testing
-
“Let us throw off everything that hinders … fixing our eyes on Jesus.” (Hebrews 12:1–2)
-
Seemingly every news station, every social media post, and even conversations overheard at the coffee shop last week centered on the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk. Everyone had an opinion. Anger was palpable. Fears were voiced. Emotions were high. There was no escape.
But then, in the quiet of the evening, when the noise had faded, my heart ached in the arms of my Savior. I simply stood in His presence, letting His love and safety wash over me. In that stillness, questions and fears were silenced in the light of my Lord and King. He holds Charlie. He holds Erika. He holds you. He holds me.
Fixing Our Eyes
“Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways.” (Proverbs 4:25–26)
Right now, perhaps more than ever before, we need a steady focus. The evil and distractions of this world pull our attention in countless directions, blurring what matters most. But when we lean into Christ—in prayer, in His Word, in worship—our gaze steadies. Abiding in Him sharpens our perspective and aligns our steps with His. Fear fades, and His promises remain.
Staying Rooted
“We live by faith, not by sight.” (2 Corinthians 5:7)
When our roots go deep into His Word and Spirit, we begin to see with faith instead of fear. We gain “long vision”—a perspective that looks beyond pain and heartache to the One who holds the future in His hands.
The Example of Ruth
Ruth’s faith was extraordinary. As a barren widow, she didn’t only see loss; she saw the possibility of God’s greater plan. She believed in His promises. By stepping forward with Naomi into the unknown, Ruth embraced a redemptive vision that would place her in the very line of Christ.
Ruth’s example teaches us that courage is required to follow Christ through seasons of pain. Faith means being willing to walk toward God’s promise, even before we can see how it will all unfold.

This week, take intentional time each day to fix your eyes on Jesus. Open His Word, speak to Him in prayer, and let His presence steady your heart. Choose faith over fear by declaring His promises aloud when doubts or grief rise up.
And together, let us pray for Erika Kirk and her family, asking the Lord to surround them with His comfort, strength, and hope. Let us also intercede for all who are grieving right now, that they may experience the nearness of Christ in a profound way.

Heavenly Father,
In the midst of grief and the questions that weigh heavy on our hearts, we come to You. We confess that our eyes are so easily drawn to fear, to the noise of this world, and to the sorrow that surrounds us. Yet Your Word calls us to fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. Lord, help us to look to Him and not be shaken. We ask for Your comfort to rest upon Erika Kirk and her family. Wrap them in Your arms and remind them that You are near to the brokenhearted. Strengthen them with Your peace that surpasses understanding. For all who are grieving, Lord, let Your presence be their safe place, their refuge, and their hope.
Root us deeply in Your truth so that even in seasons of pain, our faith will not falter. Teach us to trust like Ruth, stepping forward in courage even when the path ahead feels uncertain. May our lives reflect confidence in Your promises, knowing You hold the future and that nothing is beyond Your redemptive hand.
Jesus, steady our gaze, quiet our fears, and remind us that You are faithful and true. We rest in Your love today.
In Your holy name we pray,
Amen. -
In moments of grief or uncertainty, where do I naturally fix my eyes—on fear, on the news, or on Christ?
How deep are my spiritual roots right now? Am I living more by sight or by faith?
Like Ruth, am I willing to step forward in faith even when I cannot see the outcome?
